Not a joke this time, I'm serious. When I first saw the Orphalese home page on the internet, I assumed that the environmental advantages of using virtual decks would be splashed all over the place. But it wasn't. So I figured I'd read all about the subject when I got inside, but I assumed wrong there too. (Admittedly, I haven't read any of the Articles yet, there may be something in there.)
I would like to know, how many trees get cut down to produce and market: (1) a deck of standard playing cards and (2) a typical Tarot deck.
Anybody know?
Thanks, Sue

Re: Anybody Know the Cost of a Deck, Tree-wise?
Hi Sue,
Here are some of the factors that I'm aware of:
1) Is the paper pulp green (environmentally friendly) ?
2) Is it recycled paper?
3) What type of paper? 90 to 110 lbs. card stock, card / poster board, parchment, or velium......... (they all take a lot of paper pulp to make, adjusted by no. 2)
These factors all impact your question, and right now I'm looking into it, not just to cut costs, but also because of being into taking walks in the woods, clean air, etc......
And no, I don't know (yet!) how to answer your question, but I hope that this helps in making a framework for the discussion......
Your Welcome,
Marvin

Hi, Marvin!
You're right, there are variable factors. I was thinking of non-recycled paper. I'll bet somewhere there's a list showing how many trees must be cut down to make various paper products. And I'll bet a deck of playing cards -- or something very close to it -- is on that list. I only want an estimated figure anyway.
When visiting in N. California (upstate in the redwood forests), I saw TV commercials claiming that 26 trees per year are cut down to support the average smoker. This supposedly includes the cigarette papers, the packet paper, the carton, and all of the paper consumed -- by tobacco growers, advertising agencies, shipping companies, etc., the entire production chain -- in getting the tobacco from the fields to point of sale.
BTW, don't shoot me if you disagree with the above statistic, I'm just using it as an example of the kind of info I'd like to get about card decks. Maybe I'll contact Earth First! or the Sierra Club and see what they have to say.
Thanks for your response.
Best,
Sue
