Post by Programmer »

Just to say I have uploaded a new version of the P2P application which has a few improvements. Please download it if you want to take part in the testing and have some fun exchanging decks :)

P.S The previous version will stop working now the new one is available.

P2P Version 2.0

Nice! I see 10 people connected and I've just shared 148 decks from my collection for all to download: a good reason for giving the program a try! I'd like to encourage everyone participating on this to share his or her views and opinions on the forum, and don't just grab and save, like the motto of almost all P2P engines out there on the Internet. Best to all.

P2P Version 2.0

Hi Richard,

And the Ghost of Win 98 rears it's ugly head......

I can't install the P2P software, as I cannot (right now!) upgrade to a newer OS......

Is there a Win 98 version?

Thanks,

Marvin

Hi Marvin,

You are so right, every time I think I have laid the ghost of Windows 98 to rest (as have Microsoft, who have stopped supporting it), it comes along and bites me in the bum.

What is the message you get when you try to install it?

Cheers
Richard

Hi Richard,

Here is the error message:

Prerequisite check for system component Windows Installer 3.1 failed with the following error message:
Installation of Windows Installer 3.1 requires Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 or later. Contact your application vendor.

See the setup log file located at 'c:windowsTEMPVSD1392.TMPinstall.log' for more information.

I've tried sending it to you via e-mail, now I'll try it this way....

I hope that it helps.....

Take Care,

Marvin

Hi Marvin,

I did get your email, sorry I didn't get around to replying quicker - it has had me thinking.

The reason that you are getting that message is that in the set-up program I have specified that the person installing the program has to be running Windows Installer version 3.1. I didn't realise until now that this is incompatible with Windows 98. This is a bit of problem because the reason I made version 3.1 a pre-requisite is I have become aware of some people not being able to install the program, and I have learned that this version of the installer is required for .Net 2.0 apps to install correctly under all circumstances.

It really irks me as you can imagine. The Microsoft documentation about .Net 2.0 stated that is was compatible with Windows 98, but it turns out that it requires an installer that isn't. And then very neatly they announce that they are no longer supporting Windows 98 so it isn't their problem anyway.

It is apparent though that in a lot of cases you can install .NET 2.0 apps with the previous installer, the fact that you are running the latest version of the program on a Windows 98 machine demonstrates that. So what I will try doing is including the 3.1 installer with the download, but not marking it as a pre-requisite. Hopefully this will mean that the Installer is smart enough to use 3.1 on modern machines, but will try using the older installer on Windows 98.

I will do it now and post back here when the file is available for download...

Cheers, Richard

OK, I just uploaded the new file Marvin, let's keep our fingers crossed that it works for you and other '98 users, and then I will have to monitor how it goes for the rest. The P2P install can serve as a testing ground for the main tarot program. BTW I didn't change the date or version number because it is not really a change to the program, just the packaging.

Hi Richard,

It tried to install the P2P software. The message stated that: this Os did not support a windows service like win nt, and win 2000. As I have no way to upgrade at this time that poses a problem.....

Is there any other way to go about this?

Take Care,

Marvin

Hi Marvin,

This sounds like a much more fundamental problem, because it suggests that apart from the installer issues the mechanism of the P2P program itself is incompatible with Win 98. So if and when the P2P mechanism replaces the current Deck Exchange it will be necessary for me to support two versions: one for '98 users and one for the rest of the world. This will at least mean there is something that is available for you guys, but it will be the end of the line as far as development and evolution goes, that final cut will be fossilised as a backwards compatible download which I will keep on the website until such time as it becomes clear from download stats that nobody is interested in it.

Of course, with you being such a prolific contributor it would be very unfortunate if you got left behind in this way, so until you get a chance to upgrade your O/S I will make a point of including a selection of your decks on my own shared list, and I am sure that many other users will do likewise.

Sorry it is bad news!

Richard

Hi Marvin:

Seems that all geeks here forgot that Windows 9x-based kernel versions don't support the use of services , this is a feature of NT-based Windows. If I were you, I'd consider the update of W98 into Windows 2000: is reliable, easy to install, OT compatible and ** to buy a license, since Microsoft is focused in XP, 2003 Server and Vista now. It's the OS we use at the office, and it can bear almost anything! Best.
