Timeout after a Minute?

Post by Firehawk »

I was wondering if there is a setting I need to set. When I download a deck with a small size, generally I have no problems. But when I go to download one that is "larger" - the p2p sharing says it is downloading, but somewhere around a minute (55 seconds to a bit over a minute), it says "lost connection with server" - and that's it (instructed to restart the p2p).

Is this a setting somewhere on my end that needs to be updated? Or something on the server? Or - something else?

I recently registered, and should have a current version of everything. I'm running on Windows 7.

Many thanks!

I am a bit puzzled by why that is. There is a timeout for receiving decks but it is set much higher, around twenty minutes I seem to remember, and it is actually hard coded that way so it is not something the user could configure. Could it be that your internet connection is dropping? I know that sounds like a cop out for an explanation but it is the only thing that occurs to me right now. I have personally tested downloads of over 30 megs which took several minutes so it definitely isn't the configuration of the program per se. Is this something that happens 100% of the time or do you sometimes get beyond the one minute mark?

Many thanks for taking the time!

The "exact" time is variable, but always between 0:55 and 1:05; most frequently between 0:55 and 1:00. If the deck is small enough to make it in under that time (2M or less, roughly), there are no problems.

I don't see any other network issues on my end (I can download CD ISO images without problems, slow, but it works). I use a low-speed DSL (700k-ish, if I remember right).

Many thanks for your time!

Hey, if there's a setting I need to look at/change in Windows, I'd be happy to, as your description seems to make it sound as if it is on my end. I just don't know were to look. I'm very command-line oriented, so that should be OK if required.

Thanks!

I am having this exact same problem when I am logged in at our favorite coffee shop in town. One minute then shut down. Fastest wifi in town, stream video, audio, download huge files from other sites. Go to the P2P site from Orphalese and it's one minute only. Mystery.

Love your program and after testing I registered, but hoped to get some more decks, especially the Radiant Rider Waite and Fenestra. I did not try the P2P exchage on the free version thinking it would not work. Then I viewed You Tube video by Mr. E Tarot who highly recommended the product. After I registered, I tried the exchange but no luck. I have been trying for two days to connect, morning, noon, and night. All other downloads I perform on other programs or even downloads from the deck section of the Orpholese website work fine. I have high speed internet service (wireless tower that only runs about 500kbit to about 2.0kbit). I am using an Ascer Aspire One with 1GB RAM with Windows XP. I have downloaded large files for 30 to 60 mintues without problems.

Every attempt will error out in less than one minute and display "Unable to find the user - they may be logged off" at the top of the preview window. And "Connection failed" pop up window appears suggesting I close the exchange and reopen. I have done this dozens of times over the last two days with no success. Perhaps this is due to the holidays, but I thought I would ask just to be sure. It does this on every deck I try (from Fenestra to Radiant Rider Waite and all the RW type cards).

I am not familiar with this program, so I apologize if I am doing something wrong. It is just that all the decks appear and it lets me preview, but none will download.

Thanks and Happy New Year,

David

Hi David,

Happy new year and sorry for the delay in replying to this. It definitely sounds to me like the same issue that has been affecting other users that have posted on this thread, and it doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong. Downloading decks from the website is technically different from using the P2P so it doesn't surprise me that one works and not the other. The P2P uses a TCP connection based on the Windows Communication Foundation technology and it seems to be a bit fragile for some users on certain connections. I have been mulling it over since reading the other posts on this thread, supposing that it might be something affecting users logging on via wireless in public places. I do have one idea, which is to try to make it so the program uses a more robust conventional HTTP connection when the deck has already been exchanged and cached on the server, and a TCP connection when it is still only available on the other user's remote machine. I have a strong feeling this will solve these kind of issues for many decks. I am planning to look at this in the next couple of months but I can't say exactly when it will be - I will post back on this thread when something is available to try out.

Just to completely clarify the situation for other users who come across this thread, the P2P exchange is available and fully working (barring this kind of technical problem obviously) without registering the program. The only limitation is that you can't make your own decks available to share with other users until registering.

Cheers,
Richard

Understood. I will also try to download at different locations and see if that helps. So far I have only attempted this at my home. On a postive side, I decided to create my own deck with the Universal Waite deck that I own. I scanned the images and am inserting the interpreations I am most fond of (specifically, Joan Bunnings) in the LWB and then adding my own notes in the Personal section. The process was simple and effective. So, although I have not been able to downlaod other decks, I am now able to create my own. Thus, if I really want a deck the way I want it, I can always create it for myself.

Thanks again for a wonderful program.

I've had a similar problem. It seems to have stemmed from an update to Windows not too long ago.

Five weeks ago I was able to connect to the P2P connection with no problem. Now I cannot connect nor can i re-register my copy of the program. I've turned off my Windows Firewall totally and also turned off my copy of Avast as well. So I'm getting a little frustrated, especially since I'm plugging this program on a tarot podcast I'm doing called "Tarot Talk". I'd really like to get some more decks so I can check out their artwork on the show and so on, but without being able to connect, well... I can't talk about what I can't get to.

I noticed I was suddenly getting hung up at the P2P so I downloaded a later version and now I don't even have an option for P2P or even the Orphalese website from the program. Has this feature been removed?

For me it's not a big deal, but I'm curious. I use the program with the half dozen tarot packs I physically own, or occasionally ones I'm trying out. It was fun though to see some of the other decks.
