Hi Barb,

It sounds like you might need the Windows Installer "Clean-up" utility, which you can read about and download here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

With this tool you should be able to expunge Windows memory of the program and then reinstall. It is a bit like that gadget from Men in Black, only it runs on a PC and it doesn't work on people.

Cheers,
Richard

Help! I can't uninstall Orphalese. I can't run my current installation of Orphalese. And I can't install a new version of Orphalese. If I use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility it says it's removing the program but when it's finished it's still there.

I'm running Windows XP Home and my firewall/anti-Virus is Windows Live OneCare.

Hi There,

When you say it is still there, do you mean the program files, a short cut, or that you can still see it in Add/Remove programs?

How are you trying to run it (desktop shortcut, etc) and what error does it give you?

Cheers,
Richard

This is what happens when I try to install the program

1. Select "Setup" from the unzipped downloaded folder.

2. Select "Run" from the Open File - Security Warning window telling me that "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software...This file does not have a valid digital signature that verifes its publisher. You should only run software from publishers you trust."

3. Windows Installer loads, then a series of windows from Orphalese load and I click through the installation. The blue bar goes almost the end and then this window pops up:

Window title: Orphalese Tarot
Window text:The feature you are trying to use in on a network reasoure that is unavailable. Click OK to try agian, or enter an alternateive path to a floder containing the installation package 'Orphalese Tarot.msi' in the box bellow.
Use source:
Dialoge box: c:\documents and settings\PC User\Destop\tarotsetup

4. I click OK

5. New window:
Window title: Windows Installer
Window text: The path'c:\documents and settings\PC User\Destop\tarotsetup_tod\Orphales Tarot.mis cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try againk, or try to find the installtion package 'Orphalese Tarot.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product Orphales Tarot. [OK]

6. New window:
Window title: Orphalese Tarot
Text: The older version of Orphalese Tarot cannot be removed. COntact your technical support group.

7. New window:
Window Title: Orphalese Tarot
Window text: Installation Incomplete. The installer was interrupted before Orphales Tarot could be installed. You need to try agin. Click "close" to exit.

This what happens when I try to run the program from my Windows Start Menu: Programs

1. This window pops up
Window title:Windows Installer
Window text:The feature you are trying to use in on a network reasoure that is unavailable. Click OK to try agian, or enter an alternateive path to a floder containing the installation package 'Orphalese Tarot.msi' in the box bellow.
Use source:
Dialoge box: c:\documents and settings\PC User\Destop\tarotsetup

2. I then click OK. (On my desktop is the unziped Tarotsetup folder from your website, recently downloaded.). Then this window pops up:
Window title: Windows Installer
Window text: The path'c:\documents and settings\PC User\Destop\tarotsetup_tod\Orphales Tarot.mis cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try againk, or try to find the installtion package 'Orphalese Tarot.msi' in a folder from which you can install the product Orphales Tarot.

3. I then click OK on that window and this window pops up:
Window Title: Orphalese Tarot
Window text: The specified service already exits

4. I click OK on that window and then this window pops up:
Window Title: Orphalese Tarot
Window text: Installation Incomplete. The installer was interrupted before Orphales Tarot could be installed. You need to try agin. Click "close" to exit.

I select "Orphalese Tarot" from the dialog box of installed products, my screen jumps into black and white DOS-land, plain white text flies by, I am returned to Windows and see the program still remains listed in the dialog box. I reboot. The program still remains in the dialog box.

I have searched for these messages on Google and all the articles I have read seem to suggest that the Cleanup Utility should fix the problem. It is frustrating to not be able to read what is in that DOS window, but one could guess it is the same message you are getting all the way along.

Could it have something to do with permissions, I wonder. You are logged in to Windows XP as an account called PC User. That sounds like it might not have full administrative rights on the machine. If so, could you try logging in as an administrator and then uninstalling/reinistalling? You would have to move the setup files to somewhere accessible to all users, like a normal folder on the C: drive.

It is the only thing that occurs to me for now...

The Cleanup Utility is a five year old program that is poorly documented, causes lots of people problems, hasn't been updated in many years, and does not universally remove all traces of previously installed programs.

PC User has administrator rights. It is an administrator account.

Norton, Adobe, and of course, Microsoft are notorious for having programs that are next to impossible to uninstall. (Like Orphalese, these programs seem to do a lot of internet "phoning home".) They provide their users with a list of step-by-step instructions to manually delete ALL traces of the program. The process involves setting Windows Explore to showing hidden and system files, searching for files and folders throughout the hard disk(s), deleting them, and then deleting all related entries in the registry that are SAFE to delete.

Perhaps that's what I need.

There are programs you can download which alert you to all changes in the registry, so what I can do is download one of these programs and make a list of all changes before and after installation. I imagine there will be a lot of keys with the long numerical strings or GUIDS that Windows Installer uses to identify things.

I can't do this right now though because I am going on vacation later today and I have to do a load of packing etc. I will do it when I come back in a couple of weeks or anyone else who is interested could do it and post the results here.

As far as "phoning home" goes, the only time the Orphalese program connects to its server is when the program is registered, to update the user database. It tells the user that it is going to connect before it does so. To me that doesn't seem excessive.

Thanks. You're right. That's not excessive.

I assumed Orphalese (DeckService) was phoning home a lot because of the firewall alerts I was getting until I turned off the alerts for that program. The alerts would come when the program hadn't been loaded.

Also, in my recent attempts to uninstall/install the program I was getting farther along by disabling my firewall, though not to the point of total success.

Hi Orphuser,

It is true that if you are sharing a deck or decks on the DE then the program does regularly ping the P2P server in order to keep the connection alive. It is just a couple of bytes but it is enough to let the server keep track of which machines are still logged on. I am looking for ways to remove the need for it to do that.

I found a program to analyse the registry as mentioned and this is the list of new keys it came up with after installing the program:

It is quite a long list as you can see. My guess would be that the first set of items in the list under the key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\ are probably the most relevant. It could well be that the user data code S-1-5-21-1343024091-1078081533-725345543-1008 is just something relevant to me and for you it is something different. This would make the list pretty much useless. The items at the end of the list are just for establishing the ".reading" file extension, they would not have anything to do with the problem you are having.

Of course I should point out what you obviously already know, which is that manually altering the registry can have adverse consequences if you accidentally delete the wrong key or value. I think it is safe to say that if you delete key with the word "Orphalese" in it this will only affect the Orphalese Tarot program and nothing else (and since you can't run the program at the moment there is not much to worry about there), but it is probably best to make a system restore point before trying this hack in case moggy jumps on to the keyboard at the wrong moment etc.

Good luck,
Richard
