Re: Calling New Vista Users

Post by WebWeaver »

Hi Richard, well I am logged in as an administrator, so that might effect it some. I'm only being asked when I start the program. However, I have all my "stuff" in my document folder so it's not under any type of administrator only access. That might be why they are having to grant access for their decks, spreads, ect.

I do wish there was a way to override on Vista's end like you do with a firewall. This is the kind of thing that really bothers me about Microsoft, yet I'm not willing to stop using it, so... wadda gonna do?

Ok thanks for the feedback Shari. Having struggled with this for several weeks and it would seem that the program has to be run as an administrator. Even some operations that to me seem very simple and non-controversial, such as reading the contents of the Spreads folder to create the "My Spreads" menu, gives a permission denied error for some Vista users. The worst of the problem seems to be that operations which work fine for some users give errors for others, which means I can never really be sure the program is going to run smoothly on any Vista machine. So in view of all this I have gone back to specifiying that the program needs to be run as an Administrator. The new version that I uploaded at the weekend will show the Shield icon on the desktop shortcut and will ask for elevated permissions whenever it is run. I know this is an annoyance for Vista users, but obviously it is better than nothing.

Yes, what can one do? Love them, hate them, we are stuck with them. When I next upgrade my machine, next year, I will get one with Vista installed and then maybe I can get a better insight into what is going wrong there.

Cheers :-)
