Installation error: 8.0.0.4 Beta - Updated 12/03/2007

Post by Uwase »

Hi Richard,

When I read about the Beta, I really wanted to participate in the testing. Sadly, I've downloaded it twice (the 8.0.0.4 Beta - Updated 12/03/2007 version), once through a download manager (FlashGet - it's strangely faster) and once through my browser (Firefox). Note that those details are given in case if they influence the error I got.
When I launch the installation file (I have XP SP 2, and the Net Framework 2.0 by the way, as well as IE 6.0, but Firefox is my default browser) I get a message telling me that my Virtual memory is really low, then everything freezes and I end up having to force restart my PC (by pressing the Off button, or whatever it's called... lol What I mean is that it's not the CTRL + ALT + DELETE).
As a side note: Is it normal that on the download page it is written that it's a 4 MB file although the download is always a 4.9 MB file?
Well, I hope there is a solution... I'd love to try to work with this. In the meantime, I'm using the 7.6.1.3 version by the way. If that helps. Could it be my antivirus program (AVG Free)? Or something else?

*sigh*

Installation error: 8.0.0.4 Beta - Updated 12/03/2007

Hi Uwase,

I don't think it will make any difference how you download the file to begin with. Something is happening to make Windows Installer unhappy. The only thing that is really different about this version of the program compared to previous ones is that installs a Windows Service, but I am not sure why that would cause this problem.

Did you uninstall the previous version before trying to install the new one? That will give Windows Installer one less thing to worry about. You could also make sure you have the latest version of WI, which is 3.1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884016.

Beyond that, the only thing I can think to try is being really, really patient. Sometimes it just looks like Windows has hung, but it is just taking a long time to do something. What happens if you go away for an hour or so while it struggles with its memory issues and tries to get the job done?

Cheers,
Richard

Hi Richard,

First of all, I did end up waiting to see, and believe it or not I got the blue-screen-of-death! lol (might as well laugh!)
Now, I did download the latest WI, and I also restarted the PC, and downloaded the latest (8.0.0.0.5?) version of the beta. Also, I tried two things: first of all I looked up all the loaded instances of programs, services, etc. running that I wasn't using or that I could shut down, and I also unloaded my AntiVirus. Second, I actually, this time around, double-clicked the .msi file (before I kept selecting the .exe) directly. Worked like a charm and I am now writing from 8.0.0.5 (even though it reads 8.0.0.4 beta on the side I just noticed...!).

As a side note, it took me a while to figure out the deck exchange system - I kept seeing nothing at first, even though I clicked the extreme left button, until I finally thought of hiting the search button... duh! Silly me. So all in all, so far, all is good! :D Thank you as always for making/maintaining and improving such an incredible program!

Take care,

Uwase

*sighing and rolling eyes at my own self* Sorry by the way! I figured out why it said 8.0.0.4 on the side... it's the post title! Aye aye aye!
