dotnet install problem

Post by stormdancer »

I downloaded the dotnet v.2 sunday afternoon and have had problems. There is a task in task mgr that runs constantly and uses 100 cpu. I finally figured out how to end that task, but of course nothing is working. Should I just uninstall the dotnet and try again??? The link is for a stand alone version, right??? because i already uninstalled version 1.0

dotnet install problem

Hi Stormdancer,

For future reference, you should never uninstall a version of .NET that is up and running. This is because the Orphalese Tarot is just one of many Windows programs that use it. Different versions of the .NET framework (there have been three so far - 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0) can sit quite happily side by side, and programs which have been written for one can't necessarily use the others. I would guess that the problem you had was more to do with uninstalling 1.1 than installing 2.0.

When you say, nothing is working do you mean that you are on another machine and your own computer won't even boot into Windows? That would suggest an even more fundamental problem such as a hard drive failure.

Re the link, I am not sure which one you mean - do you mean for the program or for .NET?

Cheers,
Richard

Sorry for being unclear...nothing in the orp program is working, but like i said in my private e-mail to you, the tarot.exe starts running in task mgr, but nothing else happens...no error msgs or anything else. SO how can I fix my dot net mess. As far as i know, nothing else was using the dot net version that i un-installed. I had pu it in specifically for orp. What can i do at this point??

by the way, a number of my e-mails got sent back undeliverable due to msg length??? Anyway, here i am an all is good

the task was....mscorsvw.exe....

When i start up the orp program, i get a busy hourglass for a few sec., then nothing. The old version hasd a prolonged startup, so i'm guessing nothing is happening because of the dotnetfx problem.

Hi Again,

This is getting confusing, we are having two conversations at once, but at least I have worked out that you are the same person now :)

The best thing might be to try and reinstall the previous version of .NET, which was probably 1.1. As I said, there is no reason not to have more than one version installed at the same time.

Re the emails, as I said in the one I sent you, I am having a very bad weeks with spammers taking over all my personal accounts and my ISP being temporarily unable to set me up with any new ones due to their own little crises. It never rains but it pours.

Keep me posted with the .NET situation, I will do what I can.

Cheers
Richard

dotnet install problem

Hi Alicia,

I am having a bad week for email, so I am assuming you didn't get the one I sent you yesterday.

I think the problem has something to do with the mscorsvw.exe program which you said was running in the background. This program is related to .NET and is installed with version 2.0. The idea is that it does background compilation and makes the framework load faster. From what I can gather it generally goes unnoticed, but in some cases it can cause a machine to almost grind to a halt, taking up 100 of the available CPU, albeit on a very low priority thread. I haven't been able to find out why it affects some machines in this way, or why in some machines it runs by default and in others not. I checked my own machine and it is set to only run on request. What seems certain though is that it does not have to be running at all, and you can switch it off for good in the following way:

Go into Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Services and select the item .NET Runtime Optimization Service. You can stop it by pressing Stop, but you should then make sure that Start up type is set to Manual or Disabled, not Automatic. This might be on a drop down list, or you might have to right-click to see a properties window, depending on your version of Windows.

Why don't you try this and see if it makes a difference? Also, could you say what operating system you are using and roughly what your computer setup is?

Cheers

dotnet install problem

I'll just keep our posts here to avoid confusion.

I've already disabled that task in the manner you suggested

I'm using an intel pentium 3, 800 mhz, 268??ram...windows 2k.

I've un-installed orp and will try to re-install...see what pops up. before i start, in the unzip folder there is a set-up and a windows installer pkg. Maybe I'm installing wrong, so can you walk me through it step by step. Which to I run first? In the past I just ran the set-up. If i remember correctly, there was a question during that set up process about repairing orp and un doing something. any thoughts on this part of the operation before i start.

When I had orp installed before, it showed up in add/remove programs, but no numbers after it....like 86 MB ( or whatever) like the other programs listed. Also, tarot.exe would run, but nothing was happening.

Hi Alicia,

Ok, you only need to double click the setup file to start the installation. But...

What you are telling me about the question about repairing the program and undoing something might be very interesting, because it is definitely not part of the normal installation routine.

It makes me think that maybe Windows has got confused about what version of the program is actually installed. This might have come about for example if you installed the program on top of an old version of the program without uninstalling the old one first. This should not happen, but it might have done if for example your original installation was from the Tarot of Dreams CD, which had a different product code from the normal OT.

You might want to read this article and try running the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility before attempting the reinstall: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301. You can also download the utility from the same site.

Cheers
Richard
