New Deck Exchange Idea's and Thoughts

Post by WebWeaver »

Hi Richard, now that the old exchange is gone, could you give us some pointers on how best to use the new exchange?

I also think it's is a good idea to get the exchanged cleaned up a bit. Everything should have a type. It's fairly confusing telling what is what. Maybe others can be given extra permissions? There are also some double decks, and decks that need to be deleted because they are mistakes. I'm willing to help out and I know others are as well if that's possible.

A good idea WW, we need to make some driving rules on how to catalog those uploads. It is very good that many users take the time and effort to share it with us, but with the amount of files we have now, some might drown in the chaos:)

I vote for WebWeaver as moderator for Down/upload section and hopefully a long term helper for Richard in the Zone:)

Hi,

Might I suggest:

Red for Tarot
Green for Cartomancy decks
Yellow for Oracler decks

Just a thought,

Thanks Rhutobello :o|
I think the colors are a great idea Marvin. I haven't had too many problems but I also haven't been able to play too much.

Sorry I haven't paid too much attention to this thread, I have been thinking about it though.

The idea of having moderators was discussed at some length last year, and it was one of the things that made me want to go for this new approach which lets the user decide how to organise their decks. At the time I invited people to suggest what categories they used for decks and no two people came up with the same list. Also, as far as duplicate decks go, I think this would be a lot more work for the moderator than it first sounds. You have two decks, how do they decide which one to delete? Perhaps they have different card notes, perhaps there have been interesting comments made about one deck, while the other one has better images. You can't delete the deck without deleting the comments left by users. The moderator could end up being quite unpopular. The other reason for not having a moderator is that I would have to design a whole new web interface to let the moderator do their work, and that would be quite a bit of development time which is really needed for the program. As it stands if you find a duplicate deck you can just drag it to the Ignore bin.

Re the colours, I am not so convinced by that either. To my way of thinking one or two colors can be helpful, but two many can be confusing. Programs that rely heavily on colours are considered bad because a lot of people have trouble distinguishing them, and a technical drawback is that while you can sort on a column that says Cartomancy, Tarot etc, you can't sort on a colour.

Sorry it sounds like I am pouring cold water on these ideas, you know I am alway open to persuasion.

Cheers

I should add that if anyone was right for the job it would be WW, I'm just not sure it is a good idea right now :)

Agein agree upon WW, and I even agree with your point about not a good idea right now, ...Why....With the new deck exchange, we have all become our own moderators:)

I was dooing a bit of clean up on my deck folder on my pc and found a deck that was corrupt. I wondered how to get rid of it in deck exchange, and the solution was simple...the folder Ignore:)

We must only be better to sort out deck exchange the way we want it to funktion for us self, that way there are no limits or borders, that can give frustration. We have got the tool....now we just have to learn to use it:):)

Thanks for the vote of confidence :-
My thoughts are this isn't a need past the point of the old deck being cleared up. As to the doubles, you made a good point, however I do think that some of the naming could also be cleared up. The Durer deck is a great example. It's in the base with the funky U, most people wouldn't find it with a search because of that. However it is also missing a card. If there are no notes, what is the point of using up space, and if the're are notes why can't they be moved to the carddata file base?

It is overwhelming to see 700 decks 600 of which you don't know if they are tarot, oracle, cartomancy or other. It was my thought that it might just freak someone new out. Now when uploading you have to choose (or I think you do), so it won't be an issue from now on, I do think it should be cleaned up to begin with. Even names don't give you information. Someone can of course take the time to assign their own based on which folder they go in, however I feel many new owners of Orphalese are just wanting what they want. As it is your looking at a couple of hours to to through and make those decisions.

The more people accessing, and uploading the more this may be an issue. Of course IMHO .-)

You know I love it!

Hey all, I agree that it may not be a high priority but really believe that the deck exchange needs a bit of a tidy up.

It's mainly the deck titles that I'm talking about. I agree that it makes it difficult to find decks if there are spellling errors in the title and some of the cards in the actual decks are out of sequence (numbering) or missing all together. And, I'm not sure if they have all been recategorised into Tarot/Cartomancy/Oracle yet?

I think the CardData.xml files could do with a tidy up too. I know that some Card Notes were uploaded after the decks (and sometimes by totally different people) and that's why they sit in the CardData.xml Files section. But it would make more sense if they were actually added to the deck zip file, or if there was some way of knowing (a link or something) that Notes do actually exist for that deck. So that once you've downloaded the deck, it asks if you would like to download the CardData.xml file too.

While we're writing our Christmas Lists, I would like to be able to sort by which decks have Card Notes. So say for example, just view the Oracle decks with Card Notes. (I know I've talked about this elsewhere on the zone - because I wanted an easy way of identifying those decks in my own Deck List that have notes and as a temporary measure, I add - N to the end of the relevant deck name to denote that).

I would also like to see the Major Arcana only decks differentiated from the Full Tarot Decks (perhaps add it in as a deck type/radio button).

Not trying to put pressure on you Richard, because I am very happy with what you've done. So just add it to your evergrowing list of things to do....

Just thought I'd post my two cents worth. What do others think?

Regards
