About the problems of late....

Post by Marvin »

Hi Richard,

My OT wouldn't load. I tried it twice. then I went to setup and let it repare itself. Now it loads, but I'm back to 6.0! Are you working on the site? Is it something that I've done wrong?

Help!

Hi Marvin,

If you take a look at what I just posted you will see why you got booted (and me too!).

This business about Windows repair jobs is beginning to drive me up the wall as lots of people have problems with it. I will explain the problem now for you and everyone else who reads this:

When you first install the program Windows updates a database that it keeps which lists all the installed components. It uses this when you uninstall the program to make sure that everything has been removed correctly. When you do a repair it recreates the program exactly as it was when you first installed it, which might have been a year ago, before you installed any of the updates. The updates get lost because they are just replacement copies of the exe, and it is the original (out of date) copy that Windows reinstalls when it repairs the program.

This would not be too bad if it just happened when people chose to repair the program from the Add/Remove programs dialog (fair play to Windows, it doesn't know that you have updated the program in the meantime). The trouble is it also does this when any of the original installation files have been deleted or moved (e.g. Traditional Tarot and Imperatrix Tarot). This repair behaviour is activated when you use the original desktop shortcut created by the setup program, so my advice to everyone is to delete the shortcut that is created when you install the program and create your own.

The only solution for you now Marvin is to uninstall version 6.0 (using Add/Remove Programs) and to reinstall 6.4 from the setup files off the website (paste this into your browser: http://www.orphalese.net/downloads/tarotsetup.exe). As you know, this will not affect any decks or spreads that you have installed in the meantime. They will still be there. The only thing that it could affect which you might have changed are the card notes that accompany the Traditional Tarot, as they are part of the original installation.

Sorry about this, I will look for a permanent solution to this problem.

Cheers
Richard
