Yep, you are right, I was trying to edit the notes using notepad. And they were not saving, I also had the program open while I was editing the carddata file. So as you said it would have wiped out any changes when I changed from deck to deck at the time.

I am not sure if it is something I am doing ut, I seem to lose any notes (cardoinfo.xml)in a deck if I change decks in Ophalese.
The notes are there if I have not change a deck that day, but once I change from one deck to another, the notes disappear from cardinfo.xml. Then if I copy the file back ...
