Hi Everyone,

Just to keep everyone up to speed with what is going on, good progress is being made with getting the Deck Exchange ready for its re-launch. I am hoping it will be on-line again in the next two or three weeks.

I have not written to any publishers yet because I want to be able to show them the Exchange working, albeit with a reduced subset of decks, so they know what it's about. It isn't really so easy to explain to someone who hasn't seen it in action. I have pretty much decided to drop the idea of collecting money on their behalf through some sort of pay per download scheme. I think people would misunderstand it and feel they were being charged twice for the program. I think the advertising value of the Deck Exchange should speak for itself, if it doesn't too bad.

When the DE does reappear, the decks that are not available for download or preview (because of copyright issues associated with the images) will still be available for comment. So you will be able to comment on decks you own or have seen, and in this way the DE will still be a valuable resource when weighing up whether or not to invest in a deck. In the past the comments on the decks in the exchange have almost become mini forum threads in themselves, and I am sure this process will continue.

Following on from this, you will still be able to upload whatever decks you like. They won't appear straight away, until they have been approved by one of the administrators (the indomitable Scorp and WebWeaver) - then they will become available either for preview and comment or just for comment.

On a personal level I am still spending about half of my time away from my computer in Madrid, and the time available for answering queries about the program, sorting registration issues etc is really quite limited now. If you are waiting on a response from me about something please bear this in mind, I will certainly try to clear the backlog of emails each weekend, as well as add something new to the program when possible. It looks like it will be this way for most of the Summer. That said, it is really great seeing the community buzzing away with initiatives like the group readings, not to mention the perhaps-not-so-new-but-still-excellent jokes, so please keep it up!

hmmmmm...did you all hear that....old jokes...from whom...not from Sue and me....must be those from Marvin:)
Well well folks....he has said old jokes are ok...so now you have to go and find yours and give ut a sample:)

Since Orphalese is a realy good program...and since you are almost done whit it (joking) I have a suggestion....why not make one like this:)

One day Bill complained to his friend, My elbow really hurts, I guess I should see a doctor.

His friend offered, Don't do that. There's a computer at the drug store that can diagnose anything quicker an ** than a doctor. Simply put in a sample of your urine and the computer will diagnose your problem and tell you what you can do about it. It only costs $10.

Bill figured he had nothing to lose, so he filled a jar with a urine sample and went to the drug store. Finding the computer, he poured in the sample and deposited the $10. The computer started making some noise and various lights started flashing. After a brief pause out popped a small slip of paper on which was printed: You have tennis elbow. Soak your arm in warm water. Avoid heavy lifting. It will be better in two weeks.

Late that evening while thinking how amazing this new technology was and how it would change medical science forever, he began to wonder if this machine could be fooled. He decided to give it a try. He mixed together some tap water, a stool sample from his dog and urine samples from his wife and daughter. To top it off, he masturbated into the concoction.

He went back to the drug store, located the machine, poured in the sample and deposited the $10. The computer again made the usual noise and printed out the following message:

Your tap water is too hard. Get a water softener. Your dog has worms. Get him vitamins. Your daughter is using cocaine. Put her in a rehabilitation clinic. Your wife is pregnant with twin girls. They aren't yours. Get a lawyer. And if you don't stop jerking off, your tennis elbow will never get better.

Okay..okay...maybe old....but it can carry the age with a smile.......AND YOU ARE NEXT!

Hi, Richard!

Thanks for offering the new upgrade ahead of time, and for all you do for us.

I'm glad to hear you're leaning towards dropping the pay-per-download scheme.

My question is: Is it likely that a publisher who doesn't want a particular deck available for download will have the same policy toward ALL of his/her company's decks?

Best,
Sue Jones

Hi Sue,

I really have no idea until I start contacting some of them. Maybe they would want to let people preview their decks apart from forthcoming releases that they might want to block (in order to create mystery) or maybe they would want to block their decks apart from forthcoming releases (in order to create buzz). I suspect though that when the deck exchange is back up and I start writing to them I will find that they don't want people to preview their existing decks or their forthcoming decks because, as Cowhead pointed out, these decisions tend to be passed to corporate lawyers who simply refuse any relaxation of copyright on general principle. I suspect that in the case of the larger publishers inviting them to take an interest will be an exercise in futility, just a case of going through the motions. I do hope to get some positive responses from the smaller, we try harder type companies though, and if anyone says, OK, you can preview this deck but not that one then that would be fine, of course.

Cheers,
Richard

Hi,
I think it would be a good idea to know who these publishers are so that we could boycott their decks, books etc and start a campaign against them

I like the way you think, Lizziann!

I know I'll keep buying their products, but only USED ones. I figure why hand over my money to those publishers when I can support antiquarian bookstores, used bookshops and recycling boutiques? Shopping at used bookstores is more fun anyway, cuz it's a treasure hunt! I always have a blast cruising the shops in Honolulu, cuz I find great stuff, often in pristine condition.

And, of course, I'll buy used decks from Powells.com and other online sources of used decks.

I realize that not everyone is enthusiastic about used decks, they will only buy them new, because they don't want somebody else's vibes in the cards. But I've never had a problem with used decks. I just cleanse the cards of unwanted energies, infuse them with my own energy, and they're good to go!

Later,
Sue
