Orphalese Tarot does not appear in Add/Remove Programs

I installed the program, but when I started it up the first time and right-clicked in the rectangle, no decks were there. I was going to download another setup file and re-install, but then I discovered that the original installation does not appear on the Start Menu (thus, there's no "Uninstall" option), nor in Add/Remove Programs.

Hi Lisa,

Sorry for the delay in replying. I have never heard of this happening before. One thing you could try is right-clicking on the installation file which you installed from (OrphaleseTarot.msi). That should give you an uninstall option in the context menu).

I did that, and indeed there was an uninstall option in the context menu, but when I tried using it I got the following error message: "This action is only available for programs that are currently installed" (or words to that effect.)

The program appears to actually be installed because I can start it (from within Program Files - it was never added to the Start Menu), and the program loads and I decline the registration process, and then I get the screen with the rectangle in the middle. All as I expect - the only problem seems to be that there are no available decks. (It gives me an option to search my hard drive for decks.)

So now there are two questions, I suppose: (a) Why does Uninstall not recognize the installation, and (b) the missing decks.

Thank you, Programmer, for your help so far :-)

Hi Lisa,

It sounds like Windows Installer has got itself confused and you have ended up with a partial installation. Another possibility is that you downloaded the upgrade package from the website instead of the full installation. This is exactly the same at the full program except that it does not contain any decks. I don't think that is very likely though because the link to the upgrade is not so easy to find, at the bottom of the downloads page, and it doesn't explain why the program is missing from Add Remove Programs. A partial installation is unusual becuase normally when Windows Installer encounters a problem with the install it rolls it back completely. In fact, like I said, I have never heard of it happening before.

Have you tried installing again? If the program is not there according to Windows Installer it should let you do that. If it doesn't you could try removing all trace of the first installation with the Windows Installer Clean-up Utility (just Google that to find a link to it) and then reinstalling. Alternatively you could just install some of the decks that are available on the website. When you restart the program it should find them.

Sudden thought: all those decks automatically unpack to the Program Files directory, which is where the program used to look for decks. Now the program looks for decks in My Documents/Orphalese Tarot/Packs. Something else I have to update and I only just realised it :-(. You would have to download a deck and then browse to My Documents/Orphalese Tarot/Packs when it asks you where to unzip it.

You could also create your own deck at My Documents/Orphalese Tarot/Packs just by creating a folder calling it something like "Dummy Deck", and inserting two or three images (old holiday snaps or whatever) and naming them 00, 01, 02 etc. Once the program is running with a "deck" you have access to the full menu, including the peer to peer deck exchange which will let you download more decks.

Cheers,
Richard
