Re: Version 8.11
Hi Everyone
After looking at your responses, I checked my Admin Services, as I do not generally use a password for my laptop. So I accessed the Orphalese Deck Service >> Properties >> Log On and changed the system to Log On as Local System Account and now it seems to be working just fine.
Thankyou for taking the time to respond, and hope this may help anyone else who has a similar problem.
Regards

Re: Version 8.11
Hi Carol,
That is interesting, but I am not sure it is going to work. I mean to say that you will get the deck service to run, but you might not be able to share decks.
The reason it is set up to install under a user account is because you might have a situation where two users of the program are sharing the same machine, and they both wanted to share decks. Each user logs in to Windows with their own user name and their respective decks are both stored in "My Documents" (but remember that "My Documents" is actually a different directory for each user, the same way "Program Files" is different for each user). When the deck service gets a request it will look for the deck under the "My Documents" folder of the logged on user, which in your case will be Local System Account. So it would only work if you operated the program and shared your decks under the Local System Account, which you can't really do.
Because of this issue I think the program will also have trouble recognising your own shared decks, which will show up in the shared list along with everyone else's. Do you want to give it a try? Give a deck a distinctive name and then share it and see it you can download it yourself. The business with the Local User Account is a bit complicated so I am only 90% sure it won't work, it would be interesting if you could try it.
Cheers,
Richard

Re: Version 8.11
Just to say, as far as the one minute time out issue is concerned I think I have been able to fix the issue, but having made changes to the server and the program itself I am not sure whether you will need to get the latest version (8.11.2) or not. The best thing is to give it a try. I have been able to download a deck which took about three and a half minutes.

Re: Version 8.11
Hi guys it's me again.
I am still having problems with this new version of Orphalese, and though I hate to be a whinger, I feel I need to express the problems I'm having, because I didn't have any before this new version came out. There are still issues with the P2P system, even though I can download decks etc... I can't share them, and now it seems the old system of being able to create a reading with two different decks has become obsolete. I have tried this again recently, and whichever deck is chosen first is giving their card meaning for the second deck, this didn't happen before, and I'm a bit disappointed with it. As I said, I hate to be a whinger, but I really wish I knew what I was doing wrong, or if it's not me what has happened to the features, why were they fixed if they weren't broken?
Please help, it's a fantastic program that is gradually losing all it's best qualities...
Sorry, just needed to say.

Re: Version 8.11
Hi Carol,
First of all I understand your frustration and I often make the same complaint when programs I use regularly stop working in the way I am used to. I think normally it is because the programmers are trying to justify their salaries or departmental budgets and if they didn't make any changes from time to time their bosses would wonder what they were doing. This definitely is not the case with this this program!
There are two issues here, one is the problem you have had with sharing decks, and the other is the business of doing a reading with two decks. The two decks thing sounds like a completely new bug. I can't think of anything at all which has changed in that respect since I added the multiple decks feature about five years ago, so it is something entirely accidental. Nobody else has mentioned it stopping working but it is kind of an advanced feature that probably many users don't even realise is there. I will take a look at it and see if I can find anything that might be going wrong.
As far as the question of sharing decks goes, I agree that it is a "fix" which for you at least has actually created a problem, i.e. not being able to share. To put it in perspective though, I used to get a lot of emails and forum posts from people who either could not install the program at all, or who had trouble uninstalling it once it was there. Since I separated out the program from the Deck Service I haven't had any of those reports, so I think on balance that has been worth it. I was hoping to get a bit more feedback from other users who may have experienced this issue with the Deck Service, but no-one else has reported it so far. I think a possible solution will be to create a new Windows Installer project for the Deck Service. It worked for most people before, but like I say, those for whom it did not could not use the program at all. My homemade installer seems to be working for most people who have used it, but as your experience shows obviously not everybody. On the other hand, as it seems like it is a different subset of users there is probably a different underlying reason and maybe having two alternative install packages for the Deck Service would be the answer. I will try and put one together and post back on here with a download link when I do.
Cheers,
Richard

Re: Version 8.11
Hi Richard,
I did get a chance to try out your latest version 8.11.2 of OT , and I was able to download successfully a deck that took about 2 minutes to complete. But I have been able to do that only the one time. In other attempts, I still get the one minute timeout problem, sometimes at 62 seconds, sometimes at 59 seconds, etc. Fortunately, I have been able to get most of what I wanted, and have plenty of decks to play with for a long time to come.
I have noticed that some decks come with defects, such as two copies of one card and a missing other card, or some really crazy card numbering systems that don't match up the order within the program, like Aces with the Courts, or the Courts in reversed order, but that's okay. Eventually I get to do the corrections, at least on the card misnumbering.
I would go back and add a feedback note to the deck, or even just quietly send an email to the Sharer to see if they could upload corrections for missing cards, except that the downloaded decks don't tell who shared them once they've been downloaded. When I download a deck, I don't usually get to play with it for a while, so when I find something odd I can't identify where it came from.
Regarding the problem of the gray Share Icon, which I have also experienced: I tried Carol's idea of changing the deckservice Log On to Local System Account, and that did color up my share icon (which had previously always been gray). Nobody else uses my computer, so multiple users isn't relevant for me. I haven't attempted to share any decks yet, though, because of the unpredictable timeout problem continuing, albeit erratically.
I do not experience the problem with the popup notes from dual decks being the same. Hooray!
But I do ask that if it's not too difficult, next time you revise the program, that you put the Launch Extra Deck option on the main menu, instead of keeping it buried in Options>Change Settings for all decks>Utilities submenu. I keep forgetting where it's hidden and what the keyboard shortcut is, and I've come to be more interested in using this feature more often than I have used it in the past.
I love your program, despite the minor inconveniences that sometimes emerge. Thank you for everything!
Hugs

Re: Version 8.11
Hi Guys
I just wanted to make something clear about the dual deck issue, in that it isn't the pop up notes that are the same, it is when I save a reading with dual decks that the notes are the same. This has never occured before since I first started using Orphalese, for example I could use two decks of different sizes, and get the individual decks notes saved in that reading, but something has happened since this new version has been created and I am finding less and less features working for me, and I am very frustrated by it, I can't even install an older version for the time being because an error code comes up and it refuses to install.
I have to say that I am very disappointed, I have always highly praised this program, and with the failing features, I feel so annoyed because I don't know the solutions. I am not a programmer, I am a program user, and the get-arounds are explained excellently, but they mean nothing to me in the fullest, because I don't know if what I've done is accurate/working or relevant to my problem. So am asking, will somebody help me with these issues, because am really fed up. I can't share any files, although I can download them, I can't save dual deck readings, with the correct notes to the corresponding decks and I feel that the version before 8.11 was better in every sense for me personally.
What has changed from the previous version to this version? Why can't I use this program like everybody else, and why isn't there an adequate help file yet? Please help me, am sure there are other users who are having problems with this version.
Carol

Re: Version 8.11
Hi Carol,
OK, thanks for the clarification. I have found and fixed the problem with the wrong notes getting saved in a reading with two decks. The latest version is 8.11.3.1. This entailed a fix in the code of the Reading Wizard, in a function that I had not edited since I originally wrote it, and it is apparent that this problem would have always existed. The card notes for both decks would have always been the notes associated with the principal deck (the one with the full menu from which the other one is launched). I only mention this to make the point that this is not an example of something which was working that has since gone wrong. You may be right that there are issues in that category, but this wasn't one of them.
I understand your frustration with there being no help file. Writing a new one is pretty much top of my list of things to do this summer. Flying Spaghetti Monster willing it will be written.
Cheers,
Richard

Re: Version 8.11
I uploaded the upgrade. I tried to install the deck service. It errors, saying I am using an older version of Orphalese, uninstall it and upload a newer version. There is a deck service thingie in the tools section, set to "automatic." I used to be able to figure stuff like this out and fell way behind eons ago. I am on windows 7. I am guessing it is not reading the upgraded program? Or the version already installed is fine?
I also have the grayed shared deck thing on P2P.
This time, I will do nothing or mess with anything until it seems to be all figured out and I can figure out what I am doing wrong.

Re: Version 8.11
Hi Debbi. When you say
do you mean in the list of Windows Services when you access it through the Windows Control Panel? If so that sounds like it might have been installed with the program previously. As you know, now they are separate downloads. Could you check what version of the Orphalese Tarot program you are running by looking in "About" off the main menu? There is a deck service thingie in the tools section, set to "automatic."
