Orphalese Review - Association for Tarot Studies

Hi all,

I was invited by the Newsletter Editor for the Association for Tarot Studies to write a Review of the Orphalese software. The Review is on Version 6.5, as 7.0 was still being Beta tested when I wrote it.

Its a great article! I sent it to my sister to show her more about this program. I am always carrying on about it and your article and the great pictures are exactly what I needed to explain it in words besides, OMG, OPT is so COOL!

I just read the article and it has cheered me up no end to get such a good review from you :)

I needed cheering up because the release of version 7 has been really messy. I had a very long to do list for this release, because there were lots of changes to the website and the program to do with the new version running on version 2 of the .NET framework. Unfortunately I missed a couple of very obvious things, such as updating the links in the OTZ that point to the new version (doh!). I only just realised that the link on the downloads page also pointed to the old version.

It reminds me of some story I heard about elephant traps. Elephant traps just consist of giant holes in the ground. Someone looked at an elephant trap and expressed the opinion that such a thing was far too unsubtle and it would never trap anything. He got the reply that in fact they are very good for trapping elephants. It is good to look after the little things but you have to look after your elephants too and stop them falling into these traps!

Seeing what a great job you and webweaver and others are doing promoting the program reminds me of an idea I have been kicking around, which is to introduce some sort of reseller scheme. The way it would work it there would be an extra field on the registration form where a new user could enter the code for a reseller who has told them about the program. Then the reseller would receive ten dollars each time someone uses their code. Can I invite opinions from you and anyone else about this idea?

Better get back to work now, my boss just phoned :)

With the amount of development that you put into Orphalese even just in the last six months, I'm surprised you haven't burnt out. Let me tell you, it is very easy to write a review about something that you feel passionate about. Orphalese is a wonderful piece of software that you continue to develop. All kudos belongs with you.

I feel as though Orphalese is my little secret and I like nothing better than to brag about it, particularly in the Tarot and Spirituality Forums that I frequent. I know that this has resulted in some additional Orphalese Registrations and one member even jested that I was an excellent salesperson and I should be on your payroll. But, being financially rewarded for spreading the Orphalese Magic was never a consideration. To my way of thinking, the more registrations, the stronger our Orphalese community becomes. More decks and spreads are uploaded for sharing, you can allocate more time and energy into development, and we get the benefit of all of these.

Richard, you have my continued support and I hope that you're not feeling pressure from the Orphalese community to deliver everything at once. People need to understand the processes involved in taking VapourWare (ideas) to an actual Software release, particularly when you are a one-man band. Orphalese is the best Tarot software out there......I know.......because I've downloaded and researched everything I could find. WE all need to have some patience and trust that Orphalese is the future of electronic Tarot.

Hi Scorp,

Well, you know it doesn't seem like work (at least 99 of the time) so there is no danger of burn-out. And in fact I am taking a break next weekend for the Fallas, our local festival here in Valencia. After that I will probably need a week of programming to recover!

I completely agree with your sentiment that getting more users in enriches the Orphalese Tarot experience for everyone. Plus if the registrations became frequent enough it would bring me closer to the dream of giving up my day job, which is a great source of motivation, believe me!

The only potential drawback of having lots of users in is that it uses more bandwidth, but this is scaleable. First I can get a dedicated server, and then I can buy more bandwidth as it is needed. So it really only has advantages.

I am very glad that you and others are happy spreading the word about the program (and it confirms I am on course with the programming) but I think it would also make registration more accessible to new users if they knew there was a way of making back some of their outlay. I am going to give the idea some more thought anyway.

I certainly second that and believe me. Orphalese tarot IS the present and future of electronic Tarot. It can't be beat!

If they don't think Deck exchange and other file exchange not is enough....then they are not realy tarot fans Those 2 are worth multiple askingprices.

I will say you give gold for pennies.....funny if you start to pay back some of those pennies too!
